Matt Stell’s Faith-Filled ‘Prayed For You’ Scales Charts
Matt Stell’s steady climb to the top involved faith and prayer.
After all, it’s the basis for his uplifting hit, “Prayed For You,” – reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart in October.
If offers lyrics that suggest praying for your mate – not just that you find someone special, but that you pray for the future person you’ll meet someday.
His uplifting hit offers grand hope to those yearning for love or gratitude for those who have. His single debuted in 2018. Following a video release that same year, it caught the attention of many – and interest in his brilliant, viral song boomed.
“This song has changed a lot of stuff for me,” Stell said. “Quickly folks were responding to it…it’s sort of taken off in a cool way. There’s a lot of grassroots interest in the song.”
“Prayed For You” brings a warm and hopeful vibe to anyone yearning to meet their companion.
Co-written with Allison Veltz and Ash Bowers, Stell took the experiences of Veltz – who had just met the man who would become her husband – and crafted that enthusiasm into a story to tell an unspoken truth about relationships: prayer works.
“I would consider myself a religious person,” Stell said. “Regardless of what that means, I’m not really hung up on acting like I know anything and just trying to be humble in my approach to spiritual and religious things.
But I do know that human beings are wired in a way that we seek out that connection and relationship. Where I come from it typically takes the form of Christianity, so I do identify that way.”
Stell, 35, grew up in a small town outside Little Rock, Arkansas and later in the Florida Gulf Coast.
A basketball scholarship to Drury University in Missouri introduced him to his future career; while on campus for hoops practice during winter break he had plenty of down time.
His mom brought him his guitar where his hidden talents and infectious, charming style began to bloom.
Stell admits he wouldn’t be playing music if it weren’t for basketball.
“There’s a lot of me in that song,” Stell said, who’s in a relationship of his own. “(The song) was born out of Allison’s experience, but we piggybacked that and it spoke for us, and that’s what hopefully connects folks with the song. Anybody that wants to be with somebody, they identify with it when they cross the finish line.”
Stell knew the song was big when it began to reach millions of views on Spotify, YouTube and the New Boots country playlist, but also when his music video debuted on CMT.
The video starred real-life celebrity couple Savannah Chrisley and pro hockey player Nic Kerdiles, and it generated massive interest.
The song has also become popular at weddings, and Stell regularly hears from fans who have a deep appreciation for the message whether they’re still searching for true love, or have finally found it.
“That’s the beauty of a song or any sort of work that anybody consumes creatively, it takes on new meaning for someone,” he said. “The fact it makes those conversations happen. I can identify with that guy (in the song) a lot.”
The song’s first verse tells the story of a guy who’s not necessarily the spiritual type – far from being preacher – but the power of a relationship changed his life, and to him that’s evidence of a deepening faith, Stell said.
While Stell doesn’t have any particular mission to be the “wedding song guy,” he intends to be true to whatever he’s doing, offering a kind of truth and ensuring it comes from a genuine place: “That’s the beauty of song writing and creativity, you never know where the river is going to wind.”
Stell wants to continue riding the success of “Prayed For You” while exploring an artistry that matches the song’s message.
“If you kind of stay the course,” he said, “good things will happen.”
