When an 83-year-old grandpa in West Virginia had his life savings stolen, hundreds of caring Americans stepped up to help.

Harold Taylor stored nearly all the $6,500 he had in a home safe – that is, until a thief took it.

His granddaughter, Jerra Poling, was crushed and wanted to do something.

“This was literally all of the money he had to his name and we are so heartbroken to say the least,” Poling wrote on social media. “He is a proud man, so I know he would never ask for this help himself.”

After some suggested she try an online fundraising campaign, she was astounded with people offering to assist.

As of today, more than 200 people have donated over $10,000.

Though Poling was trying to keep those donations a secret, her grandpa found out “through the grapevine” before she could surprise him.

However, Taylor doesn’t use social media, doesn’t understand how crowdfunding works, and didn’t quite realize the scope of what happened until a local news channel wanted to interview him.

Poling was apprehensive about potential media attention, but she knew her community should be “recognized for their kindness, generosity and all around helpfulness in a time of heartbreak and hopelessness.”

Later, Poling spent over 20 minutes reading the entire list of names to her grandpa who donated to his cause.

She secretly recorded his reaction, where he wiped away tears of joy.

“It just made me feel good and bad,” a visibly overwhelmed Taylor said during the video post – bad because, “I can’t even thank them face-to-face.”
